January POWERhour!
  Dr. Yvonne Katz

We invite you to join us at the historical Old San Francisco Steakhouse to kick off the New Year POWERhour! with our very own SAWCC Chair, Dr. Yvonne Katz.

Dr. Katz, current President of Vision Into Action Associates, Inc., is a retired superintendent with 39 years in public education.  She was raised in Baytown, Texas. Her blood is orange from attending UT Austin for her bachelor’s, but she earned her doctorate from A & M. She was in the first graduating class at UT San Antonio, earning her master’s and becoming their first inductee as a Distinguished Alumna. She organized the Alumni Association, was the first president, and began the Scholarship Program. The new Alumni Center at UTSA was named, “Katz Alumni Center” in March, 2013.

Dr. Katz has taught at the elementary and secondary levels, was a middle school principal, became Director of Accreditation at the Texas Education Agency, as well as ushered in H. B. 72 as Associate Commissioner while there.

She served almost 20 years as a superintendent in 3 districts: Harlandale ISD in San Antonio; Beaverton School District in Beaverton, Oregon where Nike, IBM, and Intel are located; and, retired from Spring Branch ISD in Houston. She was one of the Top Five Superintendents in Texas in 1991. Selected by the Texas Association of School Boards, she was the first time woman to achieve the honor. Twice, she was also selected by the Executive Educator magazine as one of the top 100 Superintendents in North America. She was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in l984 and served as its president in 2010. Dr. Katz was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award from Texas A&M in 2003.

She also served as the third President of the Texas Council of Women School Executives and established local units around the state during her tenure.

Serving on a myriad of boards, her passion shows and she has helped to lobby for the revitalization of the historical Hot Wells Hotel as their current Chair. Additionally, she serves as a member of the CASA Board of Governors and her latest challenge is as the duly elected Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Alamo Community College District, #7. She will serve for a six-year term as trustee.

You can find this trailblazer around town in her antique car or her driver’s license has an “M” on it, which allows her to ride her red, white, and blue, stars and stripes Harley on the by-ways of Texas!  Come hear her fascinating story.
